👨👧 Dad Log
Picked Nina up from daycare. The moment I stepped into her classroom, she walked straight toward me, then plopped down on the floor at my feet. She already knew how this ended. I picked her up.
At home, I warmed six ounces of milk and gave it to her while we settled in. A few minutes later, I caught the smell. Diaper change incoming. She started fussing on the couch, then handed me her book, Girl Dad. Clear instructions. I read it to her.
We moved to the floor after that. Toy xylophone. Interactive book. Baby Songs – Playtime on Spotify, same as usual. Familiar rhythm.
Dinner time. We washed hands in the bathroom, then I strapped her into the high chair with the rubber bib and snapped the tray on. I reheated leftover ground beef taco rice bowl, added a cup of water, and set it in front of her.
She surprised me. Picked up the fork and fed herself. Clean enough that I could step away and unload and reload the dishwasher while she ate. When she slowed down, I came back and finished the last few bites with her.
As the closing ritual, I showed her how to put the dishwasher tablet in. She did it herself. Small win.
Bath time next. Then pajamas.
I tried the chest-to-chest wind-down on the bed with the lights off. She relaxed, but not fully. I scrolled Substack while she laid there. When I thought she was asleep, I rolled her onto the bed.
Too soon.
She tossed, turned, sat upright, ready to keep playing.
That’s when I realized I’d forgotten to brush her teeth. We went back to the bathroom. I brushed hers. Then she watched me brush mine, fascinated.
At that point, I knew the crib wasn’t happening.
I let her stay with me while I ate some leftover lemon pepper wings and chicken lo mein. No rush. No pressure.
We got into bed together. She settled in next to me.
That did it.
