I sat in the bathtub, offloading thoughts into ChatGPT on my phone.

Not because I was spiraling about the marriage—that part was already settled—but because the idea of the family breaking apart still echoed in my body. The weight of it. The finality.

At the same time, something else felt true.

Our daughter, Nina, would have a better father with me outside the structure than compressed inside one that kept narrowing my bandwidth.

Both things coexisted.

By the second Airbnb stay—after a single night in a hotel—the expenses were already stacking up.

Still, the silence was worth it.

The third place was almost unnaturally quiet. No background tension. No dog barking. No coughing. No crying.

Just stillness.

My nervous system registered it immediately.

My phone kept lighting up.

My wife wasn’t texting to reconcile.

She was diagnosing.

I needed therapy.
I suddenly had a drinking problem.

The conclusions arrived fully formed, as if they had already been agreed upon elsewhere.

I responded the way I had learned to respond during the marriage: apologetic, empathic, de-escalating. I validated feelings. Softened language. Reduced friction.

Not because I believed the accusations.

Because I wanted the messages to stop.

A few minutes later she replied:

“Did you use ChatGPT to write that?”

Fuck.

I said no.

That was a lie.

I had used it—not to deceive her, but to polish my tone. To sound calmer, gentler, more understanding than I actually felt. To translate clarity into something less threatening.

The irony wasn’t subtle.

Even in separation, I was still being evaluated—not for truth, but for tone.
