Unfortunately, I had to drive into the IT office to reproduce a bug with the QA team.

The bug only appeared in our latest release, so we spent most of the morning cycling through different combinations of software, firmware, and client builds trying to trigger it again. No luck fixing it.

The QA team would occasionally step out for coffee. At one point I asked Mohan where they were getting it and if I needed to bring a mug.

I walked out through the lobby and took the elevator to the second floor. It was noticeably quieter than the main floor. Most of the engineers work remotely now, so the building feels half-empty unless there’s a company event. At least on the main floor the security guys greet you.

I wandered around for a bit, slightly lost, before finding the coffee station tucked inside the cafeteria area. I started digging through the cupboards looking for a coffee pod.

You see the couple on Instagram.

Anniversaries, birthday tributes, Mother’s Day essays, Valentine’s Day gratitude. Comment sections filled with unanimous praise. Everything looks aligned, clean, stable — like the system is working exactly as designed.

No one sees what keeps the machine running. How the sausage is made. Social media is the highlight reel; the infrastructure lives off-camera.

Behind closed doors, long-term relationships run on routine maintenance: coordination, negotiation, suppression, trade-offs. A constant balancing act between two people slowly drifting in different directions. None of that gets posted.

And yet, inside all of this, there’s one line you’re never allowed to cross.

Once locked into marriage or monogamy, cheating becomes the terminal sin. The unforgivable act. The thing that ends everything.

But why?

Everything else can strain. Emotional distance. Intellectual drift. Quiet resentment. The system tolerates all of it — absorbs it, normalizes it, even expects it — as long as one thing remains intact: sexual access stays regulated.

The explanation you’re given is broken trust, betrayal, emotional damage. But those are outcomes. They’re not the mechanism.

Money is external. Employers compensate productivity, not desirability. You can leave for a better offer; your earning capacity isn’t owned. Emotion regulates social harmony — praise, reassurance, approval — signals that you’re behaving correctly.

Sex goes deeper. It signals desire.

You can fulfill every responsibility in the house — pay bills, manage logistics, be dependable — and still feel completely undesired. Because labor maintains the system, but it does not generate attraction.

Labor is the currency of maintenance. Sex is the signal of desire.

Emotion says, I approve of your behavior. Sex says, I want you.

When those become linked, behavior regulates itself. Not through rules, but through incentive. The loop becomes simple: behave, receive approval, receive desire.

And the moment that loop weakens, control weakens with it.

Incentive Alignment

Sex functions as a reward system: approval, reassurance, access.

When access is conditional, behavior becomes governable. Not through force, but through reinforcement. Desire corrects faster than punishment ever could.

But when desire no longer regulates behavior, governance loses its teeth.

A man who no longer ties access to approval becomes difficult to regulate. Not immoral. Ungovernable.

When Morality Becomes Leverage

“Good husband.” “Good dad.” “Safe.” “Responsible.”

These aren’t just moral categories. They’re eligibility markers — signals that you qualify for approval, access, and inclusion. They represent predictability and compliance.

As long as sexual approval holds value, those labels carry weight. But once desire detaches from validation — once optionality exists — the labels lose leverage.

It’s like praise at a job when your side business already pays more. The compliment lands. It just doesn’t move you.

And when reinforcement stops working, frustration rises. Not because morality failed, but because leverage did.

The Threat to the Sacrifice Narrative

The system depends on a belief: you gave something up, therefore it mattered.

Marriage and restraint feel noble because they’re binding. Sacrifice derives meaning from permanence.

But sexual autonomy reintroduces choice. Optionality. Exit.

Optional sacrifice isn’t sacrifice. It’s sovereignty.

And sovereignty destabilizes systems built on duty. If restraint is optional, it loses its moral weight.

That’s the real threat. Not betrayal.

Choice.

When the Rules Reveal Themselves

When sexual autonomy appears, the system reveals its structure.

Surveillance increases. Communication becomes administrative. Third parties enter. The tone shifts from connection to containment.

When autonomy becomes real, traditional levers stop working.

You can’t guilt what doesn’t seek approval. You can’t threaten what doesn’t require permission. You can’t withdraw what exists elsewhere.

You can be compliant without belief. But you cannot be free without consequence.

At first, love smooths over that tension.

But the dynamic is already asymmetrical.

You are trying to maintain.
She is trying to optimize.

That gap is the seed of the loop.

2. Baseline Shift

Why a Potty Chair Works Better First

For early orientation (18–24 months), a potty chair has clear advantages:

• Accessible
  No climbing. No balancing. No fear of falling in.

• Less intimidating
  Full-size toilets are loud, tall, and overwhelming to toddlers.

• Creates ownership
  This isn’t dad’s toilet.
  This is her potty.

• Encourages independence
  She can approach it, sit, stand, and engage on her own terms.

At this stage, confidence matters more than efficiency.

When a Training Seat Makes Sense

A training seat works better later, when:

• Your child is already comfortable sitting to go

• They’re physically steady enough to climb safely

• You’re transitioning toward the big toilet

• You want fewer cleanup steps

Starting with a training seat too early can backfire if the toilet itself feels scary or foreign.

What I Chose (And Why)

I went with the Summer Infant My Size Potty.

It looks like a real toilet.
It makes real flushing sounds.
It sits at her level.

That combination matters.

It bridges the gap between play and reality without pressure. She gets familiar with the concept before being asked to perform.

At this stage, the goal isn’t success.
It’s comfort, curiosity, and calm repetition.

The performance comes later.

Phase 1: Introduction & Familiarization (Weeks 1–2)

The potty becomes part of her environment—not an event.

What I do:

• Let her explore the potty daily (fully clothed or diapered)

• Keep it visible—bathroom or play area, wherever she’s relaxed

• Narrate casually:
  “This is where we pee and poop. You’ll get to try soon.” or the classic banger “Pee-pee poo-poo pee-pee poo-poo!”

Low-stakes sits (1–2x per day):

• Morning after waking

• Before bath

• Before or after nap

No expectations. No timers.
If she sits for 10 seconds, that counts.

Goal:
She learns the potty is normal, safe, and boring—in a good way.

Phase 2: Routine Building (Weeks 3–4)

Now we attach the potty to predictable moments.

Potty timing anchors:

• First thing in the morning

• After meals or snacks

• Before bath

• Before bedtime

Diaper stays on for now.

I say:
“Let’s sit on the potty before we put on a fresh diaper.”

She sits for 1–2 minutes max.

If she goes:
“You peed in the potty!” (calm, genuine)

If she doesn’t:
“That’s okay. We’ll try later.”

No disappointment. No hype.

Goal:
Potty becomes part of the day’s rhythm—not a pop quiz.

Daily Potty Rhythm (Intro Stage)

• Upon waking: Sit briefly → fresh diaper after

• After meals: Sit briefly → pattern awareness

• Before bath: Try potty → already undressing

• Before bed: Final sit → reinforces routine

Dad Techniques That Actually Help

• Modeling works
  If you’re comfortable, let her see you use the toilet. Toddlers copy everything.

• Praise effort, not output
  “You sat on the potty by yourself.”

• Use a consistent cue phrase

• Let her flush or help empty the potty
  This is weirdly motivating.

• If she resists, abort immediately
  Try again later. No forcing.
