You already know the official drawbacks of alcohol.

Pull up any sobriety video on YouTube and you’ll get the standard inventory: disrupted sleep, increased cancer risk, brain fog, anxiety, weight gain, liver damage.

All true.

But I’m interested in the smaller, more annoying stuff.

The consequences too petty to make the warning label.

None of them, individually, are serious enough to make you reconsider drinking. Most barely register as consequences at all. They’re inconveniences. Minor embarrassments. Little failures in basic human operation that you clean up, correct, replace, apologize for, or simply forget about.

Then you drink again.

That’s what makes them interesting.

Alcohol doesn’t need to destroy your marriage, your liver, or your career to make your life slightly shittier. It can accomplish plenty through tiny operational failures that barely register individually.

Each one is trivial.

Collectively, they start looking like death by a thousand paper cuts—the negative version of the slight edge.

These are the petty consequences of alcohol.

Losing Your Shit. Literally.

You wake up with a blaring hangover and hangxiety already humming in the background. You have errands to run, places to be, and apparently a scavenger hunt to complete first.

Where the fuck is your wallet?

You check the nightstand. Pants. Kitchen counter. Bathroom. Car.

Nothing.

Now the hangxiety has a project.

Eventually, you find it buried underneath a couch cushion.

Whew.

Except next time it’s your credit card.

You retrace the previous night. Check your pockets again. Search the car. Call the bar.

“Yeah, we have it.”

Great. Now you get to drive across town to retrieve a piece of plastic you managed to abandon twelve hours earlier.

Sometimes the casualties are smaller. You go day drinking and your favorite pair of sunglasses disappears somewhere between the patio and home.

Zaddy’s Rule: Wear the cheap sunglasses when drinking.

But occasionally the drunk tax gets expensive.

One afternoon, I was working from a wine bar with my laptop, wearing my Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, drinking a wine flight and vibing like a highly productive alcoholic.

The next day, I had the laptop.

No headphones.

Those motherfuckers were $300.

Luckily, the bar had found them. I drove back and got them.

Nothing catastrophic happened. I didn’t get arrested. I didn’t wreck my car. I didn’t destroy a relationship.

I just temporarily lost $300 worth of electronics because apparently alcohol had disabled object permanence.

Skipping the Nighttime Routine

You barely remember getting home.

Do you really think you completed the whole nighttime routine?

Brush your teeth. Floss. Wash your face. Take out your contacts. Put your clothes away. Plug in your phone.

No.

You found the bed.

That was the routine.

Missing one night of basic maintenance isn’t particularly interesting. But if you’re getting drunk every Friday and Saturday, start doing the math.

Those skipped routines accumulate.

You wake up with disgusting breath and one contact dried onto your eyeball. Your phone is at 11%. Your clothes are wherever gravity left them.

You peel the contact out, brush your teeth, find a charger, and move on.

Then you do it again next weekend.

And again.

Nobody wakes up after a night of drinking thinking, Alcohol is slowly degrading my ability to perform basic human maintenance.

You just passed out.

Until passing out becomes the routine.

Repeating Yourself

You call a friend to tell him about something that happened during one of your recent drinking adventures.

You’re halfway into the setup when he cuts you off.

“Dude. You already told me this.”

Wait, I did?

“Twice.”

Apparently this isn’t even the first rerun.

That’s one of the stranger consequences of drinking. You can remember the story perfectly while completely forgetting that you’ve already told it.

And drunk storytelling isn’t exactly known for efficiency.

You add unnecessary characters. Explain details that don’t matter. Take three separate detours before returning to the original point. Halfway through, you remember another story that somehow requires its own supporting documentation.

Meanwhile, everyone listening has already heard this story.

Possibly from you.

Eventually, people stop correcting you. They nod, laugh in the appropriate places, and wait for the story to finish because explaining that they’ve already heard it takes almost as long as hearing it again.

The next day, you don’t remember telling it.

So eventually you tell it again.

Alcohol doesn’t just make you forget the night.

Sometimes it makes everyone else remember it for you.

Becoming Loud

I once had two beers for some liquid courage before meeting up with my dating coach, Rob.

We went to a mall, where he had me cold approach women. I figured my biggest problem would be the usual one: hesitation, nervousness, talking too quietly.

Apparently not.

After one approach, Rob pulled me aside.

“Dude, you’re too loud! I can hear you from the other side of the mall.”

Oh.

I thought the alcohol was making me confident.

Apparently it had also given me outdoor voice.

This wasn’t entirely new. In the past, I’d get a few drinks in me, become excited telling some story, and suddenly a friend would shush me with a finger to his lips.

I’d look around confused.

Didn’t realize the enemy was nearby.

The enemy was me.

Slurring

You approach the cute girl at the bar boldly and confidently.

The conversation feels smooth. You’re making jokes. She’s smiling. In your head, you’re killing it.

The next day, your buddies give you the scouting report.

“Dude, you were slurring like crazy.”

Huh?

I was?

Then you start replaying the conversation.

Was I slurring with her too?

Was that smooth conversation only smooth from inside my own head?

Maybe she wasn’t hanging on every word. Maybe she was just nodding because deciphering your sentences had become more work than the conversation was worth.

That’s another petty trick alcohol plays on you: your ability to evaluate your own performance deteriorates alongside the performance.

You don’t hear yourself slurring.

Everyone else does.

In your head, you’re Don Draper.

To everyone else, you’re a podcast playing at 0.75x speed.

The Actual Gateway Drug

We’re always told marijuana is the gateway drug—the thing that supposedly leads you toward harder shit.

I think alcohol makes a better candidate.

Because the gateway doesn’t appear later.

It opens while you’re drinking.

You don’t smoke cigarettes. Then you’re four beers deep, somebody offers you one, and suddenly:

Fuck it. One cigarette won’t hurt.

Another night, your friend offers you a Zyn.

Never tried one before.

Why not?

Then one night you’re in a bar bathroom doing key bumps with some guy you met twenty minutes ago.

You don’t know his last name, but apparently you trust his pharmaceutical supply chain.

Hey, it’s free, right?

That’s what makes alcohol such an effective gateway. It doesn’t necessarily create the appetite for other drugs.

It lowers the threshold for saying yes.

And after enough drinks, fuck it starts sounding like a reasonable argument.

Becoming an ATM

The same thing happens with money.

After a few drinks, the liquid courage kicks in and whatever strategy you had for talking to women starts to disappear.

Conversation. Genuine interest. Reading the situation.

Too much work.

You’ve discovered capitalism.

Any woman who gives you a little attention suddenly looks like a viable prospect. And some women are perfectly happy to let you finance that optimism.

So you buy her a shot.

Then another round.

Maybe drinks for her friends too, because apparently you’re running a small grants program now.

For twenty minutes, things seem promising.

Then some other guy comes over and she leaves with him. Or she hugs you, says she has to get back to her friends, and disappears into the crowd.

You stand there holding the receipt.

Eventually, you Uber home alone and DoorDash $34 worth of food because fiscal restraint clearly isn’t making a comeback tonight.

The next morning, you add everything up.

Drinks. Shots. Uber. DoorDash.

You didn’t get swindled.

You got drunk and started sponsoring women.

Buying Stupid Shit Online

Sometimes you don’t even need to leave the house.

You wake up to a $99 charge on your credit card.

What the fuck did I buy?

You check your email.

and

Oh, good.

Apparently, at 1:37 a.m., six drinks deep, you decided the only things standing between you and peak masculinity and financial independence were two online courses.

Of course they came bundled together.

You check the website hoping to undo whatever personal-development journey drunk-you enrolled you in.

No refunds.

Great.

Now you have to actually take the courses just to get your money’s worth.

Nothing like waking up hungover and discovering you assigned yourself homework.

Texting the Wrong Person

Money can be recovered.

A text is harder.

I’m drinking at a bar, posting edgy Substack notes, when alcohol decides it’s time to review whatever passes for my “roster.”

I text Sade, a stripper I’ve seen before.

Outside the club.

“You trying to fuck tonight?”

A little blunt, sure.

The next morning, I check my phone.

I didn’t text Sade.

I texted Sadie.

My tennis team captain’s wife.

Fuck.

Even worse, there’s a read receipt.

Now sober me has inherited a problem drunk me created.

I immediately send another text.

“Hey Sadie, sorry about that. My friend stole my phone last night during some drunk adventures.”

The ancient strategy of blaming an imaginary friend.

She responds:

“No worries.”

Whew.

Crisis contained.

I never went back to that tennis team.

Drunk you sends the text.

Sober you changes recreational sports.

Mystery Injuries

Sometimes sober-you inherits physical evidence too.

The hangover finally subsides and you notice a bruise on your shoulder.

Huh.

Where did that come from?

You inspect it for a few seconds, fail to retrieve any relevant memories, and move on with your life.

That’s another artifact of a night out drinking: the random cut, scrape, or bruise that appears the next morning with absolutely no origin story.

Nothing serious. Nothing alarming.

Just evidence that something happened.

Apparently your body participated in an event your brain declined to document.

And sometimes the damage isn’t even to you.

After one night out, I noticed my leather jacket had a tear in it. No idea how that happened either.

Eventually, I took it to a leather repair shop.

The guy inspected it.

“This isn’t leather.”

Excuse me?

Apparently my so-called leather jacket was vinyl.

So alcohol cost me a jacket but provided a useful product-authentication service.

Fair trade.

Time for a real leather jacket.

Throwing Up at the Worst Possible Moment

You roll up to a bar in the rich suburbs with two of your brown boys.

Two MILFs approach. Apparently they’ve had enough of the local inventory of withered old white men and are ready to diversify.

Things are going well.

Then one of your boys buys tequila shots for the group.

The bartender sets them down.

Jesus Christ.

These aren’t shots. They look like doubles.

Everyone grabs one and throws it back like nothing happened. You make it halfway through yours before your stomach suddenly issues a veto.

And then you blow chunks.

Right there.

In front of the MILFs.

Perfect.

You make an emergency run to the bathroom and continue throwing up while whatever momentum you had dies outside without you.

Eventually, you emerge, assess the damage, and decide there’s only one reasonable course of action.

Leave.

You slip out without telling anybody. Five minutes later, your friends start blowing up your phone wondering where you went.

That’s the thing about puking from alcohol. It never seems to happen when you’re sitting alone somewhere with nothing going on.

It waits until you’re having a good time.

Then your stomach pulls the fire alarm.

Pissing the Bed

And sometimes the night follows you home.

This is one of the more embarrassing ones, but I already blew up my life. We can talk about the piss.

Your wife lets you go out drinking with the boys.

Eventually, your boys do something remarkably responsible.

They go home.

You don’t.

Alcohol has decided the evening needs a second act, so you embark on a completely unnecessary side quest before eventually stumbling home and passing out next to your wife.

Morning arrives.

“Did you pee the bed!?”

You open your eyes.

Head pounding. Mouth dry. Brain still loading.

Then you notice the sheets.

Yes.

You pissed the bed.

Worse, your wife was sleeping in your piss.

You remember her telling you about her friend’s boyfriend having the same problem when he drinks. At the time, you remember thinking:

At least I’m not that guy.

Well.

Now you’re trying to process a hangover, the biological failure underneath you, and an understandably furious woman demanding that you get up and wash the sheets immediately.

So there you are, stripping a piss-soaked fitted sheet off the mattress while your body is already punishing you for everything else you did the night before.

Nobody puts this part in the glamorous drinking montage.

It’s not liver failure. It’s not a DUI. Your marriage probably isn’t ending that morning.

Although it might be the morning that cemented your wife’s lost respect for you.

You just turned your own bed into a urinal and created laundry before breakfast.

Damn.

I need a drink after that.

Still Functional

None of this requires you to be a full-blown alcoholic.

You can have a job. Pay your bills. Work out. Maintain relationships. Show up to work Monday morning and be totally fine.

You’re functional.

But functional is a pretty low bar when you think about it.

Your car can have a check-engine light on, a slow leak in one tire, a cracked windshield, and something rattling underneath the hood.

It still gets you to work.

Technically, it’s functional too.

That’s what makes the petty consequences of alcohol easy to ignore. They rarely announce themselves as a drinking problem.

They show up as a lost wallet. A stupid purchase. A text you shouldn’t have sent. A story you already told. A Saturday morning spent retrieving your credit card. A bruise you can’t explain. An Uber receipt. A piss-soaked fitted sheet.

Then sober-you clocks in for cleanup duty.

You find the thing. Retrieve the card. Apologize. Wash the sheets. Check the credit card statement. Nurse the hangover. Piece together what happened.

And eventually, everything returns to normal.

Nothing collapsed.

But nothing improved either.

You still made it to work.

You’re still functional.

Which sounds a lot more impressive until you realize how much of that functioning is spent cleaning up after yourself.

It started shortly after we got engaged.

We were leaving my parents’ house when she looked over and said, almost casually:

“You should share your location with me on Find My.”

I asked the obvious question.

“Why?”

“For safety.”

Ahh. Of course.

The answer came so quickly it sounded rehearsed. I felt a lump in my throat. I wanted to argue, but I was already too deep into the relationship to turn something this small into a confrontation. We were going back to our one-bedroom apartment together, and I didn’t particularly feel like spending the rest of the evening trapped in a 700 square foot chamber with a pissed-off fiancée.

Besides, refusing created its own problem. If I went somewhere later to blow off steam and she couldn’t see where I was, that would simply reinforce why she thought she needed my location in the first place.

Nice double bind.

It wasn’t really the app that bothered me. It was what came after. Location sharing rarely stays a convenience. It gradually becomes the new baseline.

I already knew how saying no would sound.

“Why not?”

“What do you have to hide?”

So I shared it.

I figured this was just part of the standard bullshit tax you pay for being in a relationship. Pick your battles. Surrender your coordinates. Keep the evening moving.

A week or two later, we were visiting her parents’ lake house. I decided to test the waters.

“She wanted my location,” I mentioned casually.

Her mom didn’t hesitate.

“That’s what we do in this family.”

Dafuq?

It wasn’t just her preference. It was part of the family culture. Permanent access to each other’s whereabouts was normal.

I should’ve paid more attention to that.

I didn’t.

The Pattern Emerges

Years later, I’d met a guy at a baby shower. He was engaged. I was the married dad with a wife and newborn daughter—the life many people assume they’re working toward.

Then I got divorced.

By coincidence, we later became neighbors. As we caught up, he told me his fiancée had recently called off their engagement.

One detail caught my attention.

She had wanted his location too.

One afternoon, he’d given a longtime friend who happened to be lesbian a ride to the airport. Nothing romantic. Just a favor.

His location showed him at the airport.

Then the questions started.

“Why were you at the airport?!”

The app hadn’t uncovered a betrayal. It had created an event that now required an explanation.

Without location sharing, he drops his friend at the airport and continues with his day. With location sharing, the same innocuous trip becomes a data point. The data point produces suspicion. The suspicion produces questions. The questions produce a fight.

Nothing happened at the airport.

But the app still managed to create an incident.

At first, I thought our experiences were unrelated. Then I noticed the assumption underneath both of them:

Trust wasn’t something to be given. It was something to be continuously verified.

Verification Isn’t Trust

One of my go-to thinkers on relationships is Dr. Orion Taraban.

He makes a simple observation:

Surveillance is a form of disrespect.

It sounds harsh until you ask why surveillance is necessary in the first place. If I trust you, I don’t need 24/7 access to your whereabouts. If I don’t trust you, the relationship has a different problem altogether.

A phone can’t solve either one. It can only automate the checking.

Verification can easily masquerade as trust. Someone may say, I trust you because I can see where you are.

But that’s not trust. That’s certainty.

Trust exists precisely because certainty doesn’t.

You tell me you’re going somewhere. I’m not gonna monitor every step afterward. I tolerate that uncertainty because I believe what you told me.

Location sharing removes some of that uncertainty. At first, that feels reassuring. Then reassurance becomes available on demand.

And once reassurance is available on demand, not having it can start making people nervous.

Assistance vs. Surveillance

None of this means location sharing is inherently sinister.

Safety is a legitimate reason to let someone know where you are. I’ve temporarily shared my location with a friend after having a couple drinks and riding my e-bike home. The point wasn’t for him to know where I was forever. It was to make sure my drunk ass got home without becoming roadkill.

Once I got home, the purpose disappeared.

The same logic applies when someone is driving a long distance, hiking alone, traveling late at night, or meeting a stranger for a first date. There’s a specific risk, a reason for sharing, and a natural point when access ends.

That’s assistance.

Permanent tracking is different because there’s no terminating event. The access exists whether there’s a problem or not.

One says:

Let me see where you are because something unusual is happening.

The other says:

Let me always be able to see where you are in case something unusual happens.

Those sound similar on the surface, but they’re fundamentally different.

One responds to uncertainty. The other attempts to eliminate it.

The Panopticon in Your Pocket

There’s something uncomfortable about knowing you’re being tracked. Your movement no longer feels entirely private. You’re not exactly a house pet with an AirTag strapped to your collar, but you’re headed in that direction.

Actually, the dog might have the better deal. His tracker has a limited range.

It’s like using a work laptop when you know monitoring software is installed. You may not be doing anything wrong. Nobody may even be watching. But you know they can, and that possibility changes the experience.

You stop being merely a person moving through the world. You become a dot on someone else’s screen.

A stop at a store is visible. An unusual route is visible. Staying somewhere longer than expected is visible. Mundane behavior starts generating data.

Your behavior hasn’t necessarily changed.

Its observability has.

That creates a strange paradox. The person who wants permanent location sharing because it reduces anxiety may also be the person most likely to check it repeatedly.

You’re checking your crypto portfolio. She’s checking your location.

Every check creates another opportunity to find something ambiguous. Every ambiguity creates another reason to ask a question. Every unanswered question creates another reason to check.

The reassurance mechanism becomes the suspicion mechanism.

The Desire to Disappear

Now for the inconvenient part.

I was already cheating before my then-fiancée slapped me with location tracking. She probably already knew I was a shady character, which may have been part of why she wanted it in the first place.

So I’m not going to blame Find My for turning an otherwise faithful man into an international man of whoredom. That operation was already underway.

But being tracked did something else.

It made me want distance more.

When somebody can see where you are, expects to know what you’re doing, and can potentially question every moving blip on the map, regular independence feels illicit. You begin craving places where you’re off the grid.

For me, cheating became one of those places.

That’s not an excuse. I wasn’t cheating because Find My made me cheat. I was cheating because I chose to cheat.

But surveillance added another reward to behavior I was already engaging in: disappearance.

For a few hours, I wasn’t the fiancé being monitored. I wasn’t accountable to the household itinerary. I was somewhere else, doing something nobody in my normal life knew about.

That secrecy had its own rush.

There’s a broader mechanism underneath my shitty behavior, though.

Attraction needs some distance.

Not deception. Not manufactured jealousy. Not pretending you’re Jason Bourne because you went to Krispy Kreme without telling your girlfriend.

Distance.

Two people need enough separation to remain two people: separate experiences, separate thoughts, parts of the day the other person didn’t witness. Things you can actually come home and tell each other because neither of you watched them happen through a screen.

Complete transparency can look like intimacy because it produces more information. But information and intimacy aren’t the same thing.

Sometimes knowing less gives the other person somewhere to return from.

Mystery doesn’t require secrets.

It requires space.

Technology Raises the Baseline

There was a time when leaving the house meant becoming temporarily unavailable.

Your partner might know where you were going and roughly when you’d be back. But unless they started ringing up restaurants and landlines like a private investigator, there were limits to what they could know.

Those limits weren’t concerning. They were normal.

Then technology gradually removed them.

Texting made immediate responses possible. Read receipts revealed whether someone had seen your message. Social media made other people’s activities visible. Location sharing made someone’s whereabouts available in real time.

The technology created the capability. The expectation came later.

Once information becomes effortless to provide, refusing to provide it starts requiring an explanation.

Why don’t you have Instagram? Why did you turn off your read receipts? Why can’t I see your location?

The technology changes first. Then the etiquette accommodates it.

Eventually, yesterday’s normal amount of privacy starts looking suspect.

Access Becomes the Baseline

This is where the Cyber Leash actually forms.

Not when someone first asks for your location, but when permanent access becomes normal.

Once you’ve shared your location for six months, turning it off no longer feels like returning to the original deal. It feels like removing something substantial.

Before location sharing:

“Why would I need your location?”

After location sharing:

“Why did you turn your location off?”

Nothing necessarily happened between those two questions. The baseline changed.

Yesterday, privacy was ordinary. Today, privacy starts looking like a violation.

And violations require justification.

That’s how a convenience becomes an expectation without either person explicitly agreeing that permanent access is now a condition of the relationship.

Nobody signed that contract.

The terms just changed.

Reciprocity Doesn’t Solve It

The obvious counterargument is:

“She shares her location with me too.”

Sounds good.

But reciprocity doesn’t automatically change the nature of the arrangement. Two people can grant each other identical access while using that access completely differently. One person might forget location sharing is even turned on. The other might check it five times before lunch.

It isn’t necessarily about gender. It’s usually about who needs more reassurance.

The arrangement may be mutual. The monitoring rarely is.

Even if both people checked equally, reciprocity still wouldn’t answer the underlying question.

Imagine a couple expecting unrestricted access to each other’s browser histories, email accounts, text messages, and ChatGPT conversations. That doesn’t suddenly become extraordinary trust because both people agreed to it.

It’s extraordinary access.

Those aren’t the same thing.

Location sharing operates on the same principle. Equality may make the arrangement reciprocal, but it doesn’t make verification trust.

The Removal Test

There’s a simple way to find out whether location sharing is merely a convenience or has become something more.

I call it the Removal Test.

Turn it off.

Not secretly. Not during some suspicious three-hour excursion to a Motel 6. Just decide you no longer want to broadcast your location continuously.

If your partner asks why, explain your decision.

Then watch what happens.

If they accept it, maybe location sharing really was just a convenience.

But if your decision produces an argument, accusations, or a phone that won’t stop blowing up—

“Where are you going?”

“What are you hiding?”

“Why won’t you turn it back on?”

—then the location wasn’t merely information anymore. It had become reassurance, and that reassurance had become expected.

That’s the part nobody notices when they first press Share Indefinitely.

Access tells you what someone enjoys having.

Removal tells you what they believe they’re entitled to.

The Zaddy Law

Trust is the willingness to tolerate uncertainty. The more a relationship depends on monitoring, the less it depends on trust.

Daycare sent everyone home with their summer camp supplies since the last day was tomorrow. I expected artwork or little projects. Instead, it was mostly spare clothes.

Operational logistics.

Back at the apartment we settled into our usual routine. She grabbed But Not the Hippopotamus, and before I could finish the first page she was already pointing excitedly.

“Hippo!”

Every appearance earned another enthusiastic:

“Hippo!”

Language is starting to attach itself to the world now. The vocabulary isn’t exploding overnight. It’s accumulating one object at a time.

While she watched Fucker and Friends, I unpacked her lunchbox and packed tomorrow’s lunch for the final day of camp.

When I asked,

“Eat eat?”

she echoed it right back.

“Eat eat.”

The high chair was still at my parents’ place, so dinner happened on a barstool at the kitchen island. I served rotisserie chicken, roti, and blueberries.

She immediately performed quality assurance.

Blueberries passed inspection.

Everything else failed.

I tried warming up some milk. No luck. She was more interested in watching her show than eating, so I switched the television off.

Immediate protest.

Tears.

No negotiation.

Bath time required a little improvisation. Her usual rinsing cup was still with my parents, so a measuring cup stepped in as the backup.

She didn’t seem to care.

The elephant towel was the real event.

“Ephay!”

She pulled the hood over her face and started another round of peekaboo—one of her signature moves lately.

After pajamas, hair brushing, and shoes, I told her we were heading to Mommy’s house.

“Mama’s house.”

She was ready.

I handed over the lunchbox and the extra clothes from daycare.

As she stepped through the doorway, I gave her one last prompt.

“Say bye bye, Papa.”

She turned around.

Smiled.

Waved.

“Bye bye, Papa!”

Then she disappeared inside the matrix.

Another clean handoff.

The routines change.

The houses change.

The relationship doesn’t.

The Nepotism Assist

I graduated from a party school with a 2.8 GPA and a B.S. in computer science.

Not exactly a bidding war waiting to happen.

My girlfriend—future ex-wife—had dumped my ass to join the Peace Corps in East Timor. Apparently a developing country had better prospects than I did.

My dad offered to submit my résumé to his company.

I let him.

The résumé disappeared into the corporate applicant pool and eventually surfaced on the desks of two managers. One was a white guy whose team primarily worked with SQL. The other was an Indian guy named Rajesh whose team worked in Java.

I interviewed with both.

Both wanted me.

Suddenly, Mr. 2.8 had options.

I chose Java. I wanted to build applications and move toward software engineering, not spend my career living inside databases. Java seemed like the better long-term bet: more opportunities, more transferable experience, and something I could eventually carry somewhere else.

The job was part of a one-year program for recent college grads. Survive the year, prove useful, and the company might keep you.

Simple enough.

Rajesh had a thick mustache and a boxy checked shirt tucked into dress pants—the unmistakable uniform of a man who had spent enough years under fluorescent lighting to become part of the infrastructure.

During our first one-on-one, he explained my assignment.

I was going to build a new HR system in Java using an Oracle framework called ADF. A senior engineer named Cooper would be my mentor.

I had never built an HR system.

I had never used Oracle ADF.

But apparently someone had looked at my 2.8 GPA and decided this was acceptable.

Great.

I guess I can do this.

The Cubicle Farm

I had my very own cubicle in the cubicle farm.

The place looked like Office Space with slightly newer monitors. It was 2016, but apparently nobody had told the office.

Even my cubicle neighbor seemed to fit the bill.

He was a guy in his forties with glasses who would occasionally stand up, glare over the wall at me, then bang his coffee mug against the edge of my cubicle. I could never tell if he was angry at me or simply losing an ongoing battle with whatever was happening on his computer.

I ignored him.

I had my own problems.

I managed to connect Oracle ADF to the database and build a basic CRUD application: Create. Read. Update. Delete.

I barely had to write any code. ADF let me drag and drop most of the components into place, connect a few things, and suddenly I had something resembling an application.

Not bad.

Then came my first check-in with Cooper.

I showed him what I had built.

“Great work. Keep it up!”

Excellent.

This became a recurring pattern. I would build something. Cooper would look at it.

“Great work. Keep it up!”

As far as I could tell, I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

Then I would meet with Rajesh.

Different feedback.

He kept telling me I needed to gather business requirements from another manager named Matt—a middle-aged white guy who apparently owned the HR process I was supposed to be rebuilding.

Business requirements?

That was the first I’d heard of them.

Apparently building the application wasn’t enough. I was also supposed to figure out what the application was supposed to do.

Alright.

Would’ve been useful information earlier.

Emergency Shutdown

I finally tracked down Matt.

That didn’t help much.

He gave me very little to work with, and I was running out of ideas for what I was actually supposed to build. I considered going back to Rajesh, but complaining that nobody knew what they wanted felt like digging myself a deeper hole.

I’d already tried Cooper.

Same review as always.

“Great work. Keep it up!”

Was this even fucking real?

Eventually, I started checking out.

I came in later. Watched more Oracle ADF tutorials. Clicked around the application. Watched another tutorial.

There are only so many hours of Oracle ADF a human being can consume before the body initiates emergency shutdown procedures.

So I started napping at my desk.

Nothing dramatic. I’d sit in front of the monitor, cup my face with one hand, and close my eyes like I was deeply contemplating whatever was on the screen.

It became routine.

By then, I didn’t really care anymore.

Then Rajesh called me into his office.

“The director, Stacy, said she walked by your desk and saw you sleeping.”

Well.

Apparently the camouflage needed work.

I denied it. Told him I had been watching tutorials.

Rajesh stared at me.

That explanation did not improve the situation.

Hard Dick to the Rescue

My next meeting with Rajesh finally gave me a glimmer of hope.

He had found someone who could help: an Oracle ADF architect in India named Hardik.

Hardik.

Seriously?

Hard dick?

Whatever.

At this point, Hard Dick was my last hope.

I called him and walked him through everything I had built.

He was not impressed.

“You need to use JavaBeans.”

JavaBeans?

What the fuck?

Apparently all that beautiful drag-and-drop work Cooper kept praising wasn’t going to cut it.

Then Rajesh gave me some genuinely good news. Hardik would be joining our team in a couple of weeks.

Hell yes.

Finally, someone who actually knew Oracle ADF would be sitting next to me. I could pick his brain, figure out what I was doing wrong, and maybe salvage this thing.

Hardik arrived a few weeks later.

Short. Pudgy. Baby-faced. Clean-shaven.

And unfortunately for me, he knew his shit.

Early on, he asked if I played video games.

“I used to play Halo in high school.”

That apparently wasn’t the answer he was looking for.

We had exhausted our shared interests.

Then came the pair programming.

Hardik had the patience of a dad trying to teach long division to a child who had already disappointed him academically.

I’d make a mistake. He’d correct me. I’d make another. His voice would get louder.

The louder he got, the worse I performed.

And the worse I performed with Hardik, the worse my one-on-ones with Rajesh became.

The temperature had changed.

Eventually, Rajesh started asking questions that didn’t sound much like questions about the project anymore.

“Are you looking at any other opportunities?”

Wait.

What?

Was he seriously asking whether I was looking for another job?

I wasn’t.

But apparently he thought I should be.

Out of desperation, I promised him I would finish the project by the deadline.

I said it confidently.

I did not feel confident.

By then, even I could see where this was going.

Mutual Resignation

The same director who had caught me sleeping at my desk, Stacy, was having a birthday celebration in one of the boardrooms.

I figured I’d stop by.

Something felt different immediately.

Stacy used to say hi to me.

This time, nothing.

Not just from her.

From anyone.

I stood there for a minute while everyone talked around me, ate cake, and carried on like I wasn’t there.

I already knew I was low on the corporate totem pole.

Apparently, I had fallen off it entirely.

My next one-on-one with Rajesh confirmed it.

He told me I was being placed on a Performance Improvement Plan.

My stomach dropped.

Fuck.

I had 60 days to improve.

At home, I frantically searched Reddit, mostly r/cscareerquestions, trying to figure out exactly what a Performance Improvement Plan meant.

The internet had already reduced it to an acronym.

PIP.

And according to the collective wisdom of disgruntled software engineers, getting PIP’d was not a good sign.

The official version was that I had 60 days to improve.

The unofficial version was that the company had started documenting my exit.

Maybe I could turn it around.

Maybe the decision had already been made.

Either way, I suddenly understood that I wasn’t just working on an HR application anymore.

I was becoming an HR application.

Then, before the 60 days were even up, Rajesh appeared at my cubicle.

“Come with me.”

No laptop. No notebook. No explanation.

He started walking.

I followed.

Then I saw where we were going.

Human Resources.

Shit.

A woman named Regina was waiting inside.

Rajesh sat down and explained that I wasn’t meeting the requirements of the position. Regina asked whether I had anything to add.

“No comment.”

She asked another question.

“No comment.”

Eventually, I offered the only defense I had left.

The requirements had never been clear.

It didn’t matter anymore.

Regina explained that I had two weeks remaining with the company.

Officially, they were going to call it a mutual resignation.

That was generous.

I hadn’t resigned.

There was nothing particularly mutual about it.

But Corporate America had found a phrase that allowed everyone to leave the room with their hands clean.

Two weeks later, I was gone.

My first real job out of college had lasted less than a year.

I had entered through a little nepotism, spent months building an HR system nobody could clearly explain, got caught sleeping at my desk, discovered what a PIP was on Reddit, and eventually got escorted into the same department whose software I was supposed to be building.

In retrospect, the firing didn’t happen in that HR office.

It had been happening for months.

Cooper telling me everything looked great.

Rajesh telling me it didn’t.

Requirements I didn’t know existed.

The director catching me asleep.

Hardik losing patience.

The Doorbell Test was over.

I thought the hardest part had already happened.

Claire: The doorbell cam footage isn’t anything major, but the text messages are bad. They do not make you look good and do nothing to discredit the drinking allegation.

Claire: Do not do this again. Assume that anything you put into writing or say to your wife can and will be used against you. Talk about logistics and ask for updates on your daughter. That’s it.

Claire: Your wife wants to amend the divorce petition to include drinking and adultery allegations.

Claire: Whether or not you have a drinking problem is somewhat besides the point. That is the allegation.

Claire: If the allegations are false, let’s create the facts we need to disprove them. I recommend taking a PEth test.

I read the email several times.

Not because I disagreed with it.

Because my first thought was:

What the fuck is a PEth test?

I looked it up.

It was a blood test that measures alcohol consumption over roughly the previous two to four weeks.

When I moved into my new apartment during the divorce, I discovered Scott—a childhood acquaintance—lived only a few minutes away.

We started hanging out regularly.

Late-night beers and pizza.

Electric scooter rides down the Neon Vein.

The occasional dive bar.

He knew about my cheating.

Every now and then he’d scold me about it, but it never seemed like a dealbreaker. We kept hanging out for more than a year.

Then something changed.

Whenever I ran into him at the hangouts we both frequented, he felt... aloof.

Polite.

But aloof.

I texted him a couple of times to grab a beer at our usual spots.

That’s when I stopped thinking about two friendships.

In dating, there’s a concept called preselection.

The basic idea is simple.

If other people already like you, want you, or choose to spend time around you, it creates social proof. Attraction and acceptance start compounding socially because people often infer value from the interest of others.

For men, this dynamic can be especially noticeable.

A man surrounded by women is often perceived as more attractive than the same man standing alone. The attention itself becomes a signal. Other women may become more curious, more receptive, or more willing to engage because his value appears to have already been validated.

But after divorce—or any major social rupture—the mechanism can reverse.

I started thinking about it as deselection.

The gradual process where people quietly reduce proximity once your social standing changes.

Not always overt.

Usually through hesitation, reduced enthusiasm, delayed responses, and invitations that quietly stop arriving.

The network recalibrates around the new version of you.

Social Risk Management

Every social circle manages reputation to some degree. People constantly make under the radar calculations about who they spend time with, who they defend, and what those associations communicate to everyone else.

Without consciously realizing it, questions like these begin running in the background:

• What’s the association cost?

• Does this pull me into unnecessary drama?

• How will other people interpret my proximity to this?

Those calculations are rarely spoken outright.

They’re reflected in behavior.

People rarely announce they’re creating distance.

They simply do.

When someone becomes publicly controversial, emotionally volatile, morally suspect, or visibly caught in conflict, many people instinctively create distance.

Not necessarily because they’ve reached a conclusion.

Not necessarily because they believe every accusation.

Sometimes uncertainty is enough.

“What will people think if I’m associated with this?”

That question rarely gets spoken.

It doesn’t have to.

Association begins feeling like exposure.

Distance begins feeling like insurance.

That’s why deselection feels so psychologically strange.

The people drifting away aren’t always making a moral judgment.

Often they’re making a reputational calculation.

Subconsciously.

Almost automatically.

Most people don’t avoid scandal.

They avoid proximity to scandal.

The Network Effect

Divorce isn’t just the end of a relationship.

It’s often the reorganization of two social worlds.

One of the first things many men notice isn’t the paperwork.

It’s the silence.

The invitations slow down.

The group chats die.

People start fading you.

Not necessarily because they’ve chosen a side.

Because social networks have momentum.

Information travels through them.

Stories move through them.

People compare notes, share impressions, and gradually settle into a shared understanding of what happened. Once that narrative begins taking shape, it tends to reinforce itself.

Meanwhile, men cope differently. They immerse themselves into work. They isolate. They disappear into the gym, hobbies, or recovery, assuming they’ll reconnect later.

Sometimes they do.

Sometimes they look up months later and realize the network has continued without them.

That’s one reason the post-divorce experience can feel so eerie.

In many cases, one person’s social infrastructure remains active while the other’s slowly atrophies.

It’s not necessarily about good intentions or bad intentions.

It’s about maintenance.

Men build their social lives around shared activities and hobbies.

Women build theirs around ongoing relationships.

When the relationship ends, those different habits can produce very different results.

By the time, men realize they’re rebuilding more than a household, the social landscape has already lapped them.

Divorce doesn’t just separate two people.

It separates two social ecosystems.

The Divorced Man Problem

One of the strangest parts of divorce isn’t becoming single again.

It’s becoming socially undefined.

People who knew you as half of a couple suddenly have to update their mental model.

What happened?

Who left?

Who was at fault?

Is he okay?

Most people never ask those questions directly.

They simply file you under “uncertain.”

And uncertainty changes behavior.

You stop being viewed as a husband. You haven’t yet become “just another single guy.”

You’re something in between.

A man whose story hasn’t fully settled.

That alone changes how people relate to you.

Especially established couples.

Whether fairly or unfairly, some begin viewing the newly divorced man as a source of unpredictability. The social ecosystem quietly reorganizes around perceived stability.

Nothing about you may have changed.

But your social category has.

Not because people suddenly know more about you.

Because they know less.

Divorce doesn’t just end a marriage.

It changes how the world classifies you.

You’re no longer part of a couple.

You’re a question mark.

And people are naturally cautious around question marks.

Adaptation

Deselection isn’t the end of your social life.

It’s the end of one social ecosystem.

The old script burns down.

And many of the relationships attached to that script burn with it.

Not because they’re fake.

Because they belonged to a different version of your life.

Once deselected, you don’t simply rebuild your network.

You rebuild your criteria.

Who you trust.

Who you invest in.

Who you allow close enough to influence your life.

The circle often becomes smaller.

Slower to grow.

Far more intentional.

Less driven by proximity, obligation, or history.

More driven by alignment.

That’s the hidden opportunity inside deselection.

You stop asking,

“Who stayed?”

And start asking,

“Who actually belongs in the next chapter?”

The network that forms afterward is rarely larger.

But it is often more deliberate.

And that’s a different kind of wealth.

One of the most unexpected parts of becoming a dad wasn’t learning how to change diapers or install car seats.

It was learning how much parenting depends on observation.

Most parenting books tell you what the average child does. My daughter isn’t the average child.

She’s my daughter.

Somewhere over the past two years, I developed what I jokingly call Vibe Parenting.

Not because I ignore research.

Not because I wing it.

Because every weekend starts the same way.

I watch first.

Then I adjust.

Parenting Isn’t an Instruction Manual

Some days the questions are practical.

Can she eat Greek yogurt?

Is granola okay?

Is it okay if she skips her bath tonight?

Other days they’re stranger.

Why did she sit on the potty after she’d already peed in her diaper?

Why does she sprint toward me at daycare pickup?

Why is she suddenly insisting on carrying her own daycare bag?

Is she becoming more independent?

I wasn’t looking for someone to tell me how to parent. I was trying to understand what I was seeing.

That’s where AI became surprisingly useful.

Observation Before Advice

People assume I ask AI what to do.

I don’t.

I tell it what happened.

Then we think through it together.

A typical conversation sounds like this:

“Nina insisted on carrying her own daycare bag today.”

“She suddenly wants blueberries with everything.”

“She fell asleep in her new toddler bed instead of on me.”

Those aren’t parenting problems.

They’re observations.

Sometimes the answer is simply,

“That’s completely normal.”

Other times it helps me connect patterns I hadn’t noticed yet.

A Parenting Journal

At some point I realized I wasn’t just asking questions.

I was documenting my daughter’s childhood.

Over time, the conversations stopped feeling like isolated questions and started becoming a record of who she was.

She likes flavor.

She likes carrying her own things.

She likes quiet environments.

She likes figuring things out for herself.

She struggles most when she’s overtired, hungry, or transitioning between activities.

Those aren’t parenting facts.

They’re Nina facts.

No parenting book could have taught me those. They came from paying attention.

Every Kid Has a Vibe

The goal was never optimization.

It was alignment.

Every child has a temperament. Mine is curious, independent, focused, and quietly determined.

So instead of forcing a parenting philosophy onto her, I started asking a different question.

What kind of environment helps this particular little person thrive?

That question quietly changed everything.

AI Didn’t Raise My Daughter

The important work still happens offline.

I’m the one making dinner.

Reading bedtime stories.

Brushing teeth.

Sitting beside the toddler bed until she falls asleep.

Walking into daycare every Friday afternoon.

Feeling two little arms wrap around my legs.

AI doesn’t do any of that.

It simply gives me a place to reflect after the day is over.

The Unexpected Lesson

The biggest surprise wasn’t learning about toddlers.

It was learning about myself.

Somewhere along the way, another pattern emerged.

Calmer.

More present.

More patient.

More willing to observe before intervening.

I never set out to become that kind of father.

It happened one small observation at a time.

My Rule

Observe first.

Parent second.

Reflect third.

Technology shouldn’t replace instinct.

It should sharpen it.

What She Will Remember

One day Nina won’t remember whether I asked AI about toddler sleep, blueberries, or potty training.

She won’t remember whether I researched Greek yogurt or bedtime routines.

She’ll remember something much simpler.

Dad paid attention.

AI didn’t make me a father.

It made me a more observant one.

And maybe that’s what good technology is supposed to do.

Not replace us.

Help us notice the people we love a little better.

I walked into Apostle planning to order a drink when I noticed a cute blonde zoomette standing nearby, scanning the room like she was looking for someone.

“Are you in line?” I asked.

She wasn’t.

Her name was Holly.

The conversation flowed easily, and after a few minutes she agreed to play ping pong upstairs. I usually don’t buy random women drinks, but she was matching my investment in the conversation, so I ordered two green tea shots, a beer for myself, and a High Noon for her.

Upstairs was chaos.

The ping pong tables had a waiting list written on a chalkboard, and I wasn’t interested in standing around for twenty minutes hoping momentum would survive. We turned around and headed back downstairs.

As we talked, I learned she was twenty-three, visiting from Dallas, and completely unimpressed with Ashford.

“Ashford’s boring.”

Slightly offensive.

Her friends were across the street at Opium, but she had wandered into Apostle because she didn’t want to wait in line. Four of them were squeezed into a one-bedroom apartment for the weekend, and she sounded ready for a break from the group.

On the way through the bar she spotted the photo booth and pulled me inside.

We took two strips of pictures.

She insisted on paying.

Afterward she kept mentioning that she wanted to dance.

I suggested Opium, but the line was still a dealbreaker.

Then, fueled by just enough liquid courage, I threw out another option.

“What about the strip club?”

Her face lit up.

She laughed and told me she loved strip clubs after visiting one in New Orleans.

“I know one.”

I ordered an Uber to Velour.

We walked outside, and I took her hand as we crossed the sidewalk toward the pickup spot.

The Uber arrived.

At almost the exact same moment, so did her friends.

Apparently they’d been looking for her.

Before I could say anything, the unofficial leader of the group—a guy who immediately set off my gaydar—looked over from the curb and asked,

“Can you just leave her?”

I was already sitting inside the Uber.

I’d already paid for the ride.

For a second I considered trying to salvage the interaction.

Then I looked at the situation.

Her entire group had arrived.

She was immediately pulled back into their orbit.

The energy had changed.

“Yeah,” I said.

The Uber pulled away.

Field Notes

Nightlife rewards momentum.

It also destroys momentum.

You can spend thirty minutes building a conversation only to have one unexpected variable erase it in thirty seconds.

Sometimes the obstacle is another guy.

Sometimes it’s logistics.

Sometimes it’s a group reclaiming one of its own.

Not every interaction needs to be rescued.

Sometimes the highest-leverage move is recognizing that the environment has changed and letting it go.

The city moved on.

So did I.

When I moved into my new apartment during the divorce, I brought my tabby cat, Omen, with me.

Then I started noticing the dogs.

They were fucking everywhere.

Every elevator ride seemed to involve somebody yanking a leash tight while their dog tried to launch itself at me. One couple walked two dogs through the building. My divorced leasing manager had two pugs. Almost every trip outside involved passing another adult tethered to an animal.

And among single white women, the pattern was even more prevalent.

After seeing enough of them, this song unfortunately entered my head.

But this wasn’t something I discovered after divorce.

I’d already watched it happening while I was married.

Couples in our friend group would get married and, instead of having children, start accumulating animals.

First dog.

Second dog.

Maybe sprinkle in a cat.

Eventually, the starter home looked less like the beginning of a family and more like a privately operated petting zoo.

Their free time wasn’t consumed by soccer practice or changing diapers. It was spent walking three dogs around the neighborhood with little plastic bags of shit swinging from their hands.

Once you notice the archetype, you see it everywhere.

Luxury apartment or starter home.

Dual income. No kids.

Rescue pit bull.

“Dog Mom” in the bio.

Dog stroller in the hallway.

Artisanal treats in the kitchen.

Dog spa appointment on Saturday.

White couch covered in fur.

The explanation is usually some variation of the same thing: kids are expensive. Kids take too much time. They want their freedom. They don’t want to bring children into a world that’s falling apart—as if humanity spent the previous ten thousand years living at an all-inclusive resort.

Fair enough.

Meanwhile, there’s a $200 boarding charge on the credit card. Doggy daycare. Behavioral training. Surgery bills. Birthday parties. Special diets. Pet insurance.

Apparently we have dog therapy now.

There are even airlines built around flying dogs.

At some point, you have to ask whether these people rejected parenthood or simply reconstructed a lower-stakes version of it around an animal.

Pets are the new kids.

Plants are the new pets.

Which brings me to the Dogcel.

Dogcel (n.): A person or couple who forgoes children while elevating a dog into the emotional, social, and domestic role traditionally occupied by a child.

Owning a dog doesn’t make you a Dogcel. Not wanting children doesn’t make you a Dogcel.

The substitution does.

The Child Replacement Layer

Dogs have always provided companionship.

Something changed when companionship became substitution.

For the Dogcel, the dog functions as an emotional child: a low-risk simulation of family built around a socially acceptable object of permanent dependency.

It provides affection, routine, attachment, identity, and companionship. It needs to be fed, taken to appointments, watched while you’re away, comforted when it’s anxious, and photographed constantly.

It even gives you someone to call your “baby.”

But the resemblance to parenthood ends exactly where parenthood becomes irreversible.

There is no lineage to continue. No education to oversee. No teenager developing opinions you hate. No adult eventually separating from you and constructing a life of their own.

The dog remains dependent until the day it dies.

They used to say a dog was man’s best friend.

The Dogcel upgraded the position.

Now the dog is man’s best child.

That’s the deeper pattern. Modern adulthood increasingly optimizes for the emotional rewards of commitment while preserving control over its most irreversible forms.

And this exposes an interesting contradiction.

Some adults reject children because they’re loud, messy, expensive, irrational, and restrictive, then tolerate barking, fur, shit bags, separation anxiety, behavioral problems, boarding costs, and vacations planned around an animal’s bladder.

Maybe the difference isn’t inconvenience.

It’s control.

A child eventually develops autonomy.

A dog never has to.

Dog Narration

During my marriage, sitting around with my wife and her family had become predictable.

Every five minutes:

“Should we let the dogs in?”

Then, shortly afterward:

“Should we let the dogs out?”

Once the dogs were inside, they didn’t necessarily start talking to each other.

They started talking through the dogs.

“He’s such a gentleman.”

“She’s so sassy.”

“He said no bedtime tonight.”

“Damn, he dropped a big one.”

Meanwhile, the dog had scratched itself, trampled my balls, stared at a wall for six minutes, barked at a leaf, and taken a shit.

This is Dog Narration.

Dog Narration is anthropomorphic projection: assigning human motives, dialogue, emotional complexity, and personality to ordinary animal behavior.

The dog doesn’t simply walk into the room.

“He came to check on Mommy.”

It doesn’t stare at your dinner.

“He’s wondering why nobody made him a plate.”

It doesn’t refuse to move.

“He said Daddy can wait.”

Eventually, the owners become full-time spokespeople for an animal that has issued exactly zero official statements.

That’s what makes Dog Narration interesting. The owner isn’t merely observing the dog’s personality.

They’re helping construct it.

First comes a vocabulary.

Then a voice.

Then motives.

Then family roles.

Before long, the dog isn’t a pet living in the household.

He’s a little person who happens to shit outside.

There’s an irony buried underneath all of this. Some of the same people who reject children for being messy, irrational, demanding, and emotionally exhausting will spend enormous amounts of emotional energy interpreting the inner life of an animal that just barked at its own reflection.

The nurturing didn’t disappear.

It found a narrator.

The Fur Baby Economy

Dog ownership didn’t always look like this.

A generation or two ago, the dog ate kibble, slept somewhere in the house—or got chained up outside—and somehow survived without a wellness consultant.

Now the dog has infrastructure.

Daycare. Professional grooming. Behavioral training. Pet insurance. Subscription boxes. Birthday cakes. Designer clothing. Strollers. Luxury boarding. Specialized diets.

And enough vet appointments to maintain its own medical chart.

The pet didn’t change.

The economy built around it did.

The modern dog has become a recurring household expense supported by an entire industry dedicated to upgrading it from pet to dependent family member.

That’s what makes the economics interesting.

One of the standard arguments against having children is cost.

And children are expensive.

But some of the money supposedly preserved by avoiding parenthood doesn’t stay preserved.

It gets redirected.

Daycare still exists. Medical bills still exist. Food still exists. Boarding replaces babysitting.

Somehow, the birthday party survived.

It’s parenthood à la carte: many of the expenses, rituals, and logistics without the generational commitment waiting at the end.

The budget didn’t disappear.

The lineage did.

The Substitute Village

Modern city life eliminated much of the need for a village.

You can work from home, order groceries to your door, get dinner delivered without speaking to anyone, and live ten feet from your neighbors without ever learning their names.

It’s remarkably efficient.

It’s also remarkably isolating.

The dog fills the gap.

It breaks the silence of an empty apartment. Creates routine. Provides physical affection. Forces you outside. Gives you someone waiting at the door when you come home.

It can even function as a social bridge. Walk an attractive dog through the right neighborhood and suddenly strangers remember how to speak to each other.

For some adults, the dog becomes the most consistent relationship in daily life: more interaction than with neighbors, more physical affection than with friends, more daily contact than with extended family.

Companion.

Emotional regulator.

Wingman.

Substitute family member.

That’s what makes the Dogcel uniquely compatible with urban life.

The city made independence easier than ever.

It didn’t eliminate the need for attachment.

The modern city isolated people so effectively that dogs became emotional infrastructure.

The Quiet Replacement

None of this is really about dogs.

Dogs are simply exceptionally well suited to modern adulthood.

Modern life rewards flexibility, mobility, and optionality—the ability to change jobs, change cities, travel, sleep in, spend money on yourself, and redesign your life whenever the current version stops working.

Kids fuck with that arrangement.

They’re expensive, disruptive, permanent, and eventually become independent human beings with desires, beliefs, and problems of their own.

Somewhere along the way, children went from a default stage of adulthood to something resembling a luxury good.

Expensive.

Optional.

Nice to have if the rest of the lifestyle can support it.

The child became an upgrade.

The dog became standard equipment.

A dog offers a different arrangement.

Companionship without lineage.

Dependency without succession.

Family rituals without building a family tree.

You can call yourself Mom or Dad. Celebrate birthdays. Schedule daycare. Buy Christmas presents. Take family photos. Worry about what they’re eating. Tell everyone what they supposedly said that morning.

You get many of the emotional rituals associated with parenthood while preserving far more control over the rest of your life.

That’s why the Dogcel model fits so cleanly into modern professional culture.

It isn’t that the nurturing instinct disappeared.

Look around.

People are nurturing the absolute shit out of these dogs.

The instinct survived.

What changed was where we directed it.

Maybe that’s the larger story buried underneath the dog strollers, birthday cakes, separation anxiety, and conversations narrated on behalf of an animal licking its own asshole.

Modern adulthood didn’t eliminate the desire to nurture.

It found a version more compatible with optionality.

No child eventually growing up, developing a life of their own, and leaving.

Just a permanently dependent companion waiting at the door.

The instinct survived.

The leash replaced the bloodline.

A few years ago, I worked with a senior engineer named Dave.

He wasn’t the loudest person on the team. Most meetings he’d barely say a word. Then, completely out of nowhere, he’d drop a one-liner that would derail everyone’s train of thought.

We were primarily a Go team, and I was still learning the language. Dave showed me a lot of the patterns we were using—instrumentation with Go Kit, structuring services, and other techniques you only really pick up from someone who’s been around awhile. He was one of those seasoned engineers who kept his head down, wrote solid code, and stayed out of office politics.

I knew he was married.

I don’t remember if he had kids.

When I announced I was getting married, everyone on the team congratulated me.

Everyone except Dave.

Without missing a beat, he said,

“DON’T DO IT!”

We were fully remote, and nobody had cameras on.

I couldn’t tell if he was joking.

Other engineers were on the call.

Our engineering lead was there.

Nobody really reacted.

I just remember sitting there thinking,

What the hell?

A few months later, he sounded unusually irritated because he had to take his wife to a doctor’s appointment.

Then, in the same conversation, he casually remarked that he’d rather be in Hawaii with an exotic dancer.

Same engineering call.

Same coworkers.

Same engineering lead.

The number of fucks he gave was exactly zero.

Eventually, he left for a faster-paced startup.

Our manager thought highly of him. She always said the door was open if he ever wanted to come back because he was a dependable engineer who consistently delivered.

A few years later, he did.

By then, I was getting ready to have my daughter.

I mentioned that I was about to become a dad.

Without missing a beat, he said,

“DON’T DO IT!”

Looking back, I still don’t know how much of it was humor, frustration, or honesty.

Maybe it was all three.

He wasn’t loud.

He wasn’t cynical about everything.

He wasn’t the guy constantly complaining in meetings.

He just happened to have one opinion that never changed.

The only marriage advice I ever received from Dave was:

“DON’T DO IT!”

Some engineers leave you with better code. Others leave you with one sentence you never forget.

Between attorney meetings, paperwork, and constant uncertainty, spending became frictionless.

A drink after work.

Dinner instead of cooking.

An Uber instead of walking.

Another Amazon order because waiting suddenly felt inconvenient.

After everything that was happening, I told myself I deserved it.

None of the purchases felt reckless.

They felt like relief.

Once the divorce settled, I could finally see the pattern.

I wasn’t buying things because I needed them.

I was buying temporary relief from a problem money couldn’t solve.

Then another question hit me.

How was I supposed to afford the post-divorce trip I’d been dreaming about if I kept leaking money every time life became uncomfortable?

That’s when I built The No-Spend Protocol.

Most people assume they have an income problem.

Sometimes they do.

But plenty have an autopilot problem.

It’s about interrupting the machine long enough to see what’s running it.

Freeze Lifestyle Spending

For seven days, discretionary lifestyle spending stops.

No restaurants.

No bars.

No alcohol.

No coffee shops.

No Amazon.

No entertainment purchases.

No impulse spending.

Bills still get paid.

Groceries still get bought if you actually need them.

Life continues.

But if the purchase improves your lifestyle today without being necessary to keep your life functioning, it waits.

Not forever.

Seven days.

The objective isn’t deprivation.

It’s distance.

Eat Your Inventory

Before buying more food, audit what you already own.

Open the refrigerator.

Open the freezer.

Open the pantry.

There’s probably a collection of half-used ingredients, frozen meat, canned food, leftovers, and things you bought with good intentions three weeks ago.

Eat them.

The fastest way to save money on groceries isn’t always finding cheaper groceries.

Sometimes it’s eating the groceries you already paid for.

Kill Convenience

Convenience has quietly become one of the largest discretionary expenses in modern life.

DoorDash.

Uber.

Delivery fees.

Lunch out.

Next-day shipping.

Each transaction exchanges money for a little less friction.

Sometimes the trade is worth it.

Usually, we don’t even evaluate the trade anymore.

That’s the problem.

For seven days, choose friction.

Cook.

Drive.

Walk.

Pack your lunch.

Wait for normal shipping.

Do the inconvenient thing yourself.

You start noticing how often you weren’t paying for the product.

You were paying to avoid effort.

Delay Every Purchase

Want something?

Write it down.

Then wait seven days.

Don’t negotiate with yourself.

Don’t browse reviews until you’ve manufactured a reason to need it.

Don’t put it in the cart “just in case.”

Wait.

Most purchases don’t survive the delay.

The desire was real.

The urgency wasn’t.

Replace Consumption With Construction

Spending isn’t always about acquiring something.

Sometimes you’re trying to change your state.

Bored.

Restless.

Lonely.

Stressed.

Tired.

So you buy something.

Instead, build something.

Lift.

Write.

Read.

Clean your apartment.

Work on your business.

Cook.

Play with your kid.

Fix something you’ve been ignoring.

Consumption gives you a state change.

Construction does too.

One leaves you with a receipt.

The other leaves you with something that wasn’t there before.

Audit the Urge

Don’t just track what you bought.

Track what you almost bought.

Tuesday — 3:15 PM

Wanted beers after work.

Went home instead.

Friday — 12:40 PM

Almost ordered lunch.

Ate leftovers.

This is where the protocol starts producing useful information.

By the end of seven days, patterns emerge.

Maybe you spend when you’re stressed.

Maybe it’s boredom.

Maybe Friday night is expensive because Friday night has always been expensive.

Maybe every office annoyance somehow ends with you sitting at a bar.

The transactions weren’t random.

Neither were the triggers.

Your bank statement is behavioral data.

Pause the Dates

This one is mostly for the men.

Dating and spending have a way of becoming the same activity.

A couple drinks.

Dinner.

Another bar.

Concert tickets.

An Uber.

Late-night food.

No single transaction looks catastrophic.

That’s the trap.

Fifty dollars here.

Another hundred there.

An active dating life quietly becomes its own monthly expense category.

Women spend money dating too, but the traditional script still tends to put more of the financial initiation on men. If you’re asking her out, choosing the place, and picking up the check, you’re also creating the expense.

During the protocol, remove the environment.

No dinner dates.

No cocktail bars.

No turning “one drink” into three locations and a $140 night.

For seven days, you’re off the market.

Call it monk mode if you want.

The point isn’t that women are a waste of money.

Dating creates spending opportunities.

Removing it temporarily does something useful: it reveals how much of your discretionary spending is attached to pursuing women rather than maintaining your actual life.

The number may be educational.

The market will still be there next week.

Guard the First Domino

Some purchases don’t cost what appears on the receipt.

They activate the purchases behind them.

Alcohol is the obvious example.

The first beer isn’t necessarily expensive.

What follows might be.

One beer becomes three.

Three beers become an Uber.

The Uber becomes late-night food.

Late-night food becomes breakfast out because you’re hungover and don’t feel like cooking.

One decision generated six transactions.

Dating can work the same way.

So can shopping.

So can deciding to “just stop by” somewhere after work.

Learn which transactions function as your first domino.

Then don’t spend all your energy resisting dominoes two through six.

Protect the first one.

The rest never fall.

The Zaddy Law

Money isn’t usually lost in catastrophes.

It’s lost in routines.

Financial freedom isn’t built through one brilliant investment.

It’s built through thousands of ordinary decisions made deliberately instead of automatically.

That’s what the No-Spend Protocol is actually testing.

Not whether you can survive seven days without DoorDash.

Whether convenience controls you.

Whether boredom controls you.

Whether stress controls you.

Whether an advertisement can manufacture urgency.

Whether having a bad day automatically gives your wallet permission to compensate for it.

Seven days won’t transform your finances.

But seven days is long enough to expose the machinery.

You see the trigger.

Then the urge.

Then the transaction.

Then the next transaction.

Once the sequence becomes visible, spending stops looking random.

You can’t rewrite a system you can’t see.

I woke up hungover, irritable, with a headache and a blotchy right eye in my new apartment after a night out.

Checked my phone.

9:43 a.m.

Shit.

I was supposed to pick up my daughter at 10.

I threw on a T-shirt and shorts, splashed water on my face, skipped brushing my teeth, and started tearing through the apartment looking for my keys.

Nothing.

Fuck.

Fuck.

Fuck.

I texted my wife.

Running late. Can’t find my keys.

The reply came immediately.

Were you drinking?

Damn it.

I ignored the question.

A minute later I spotted the keys sitting on the kitchen counter.

I grabbed them and headed out.

When I pulled into the driveway, my mother-in-law’s Prius was already there, complete with the rainbow bumper sticker on the back.

The shadow matriarch appears again.

Another reminder that I hadn’t just married my wife.

I’d married a mother-daughter coalition.

Sometimes it felt like the umbilical cord had never actually been cut.

My mother-in-law wasn’t simply family.

She was a permanent stakeholder in the marriage.

I walked to the front door and rang the bell. My wife cracked the door open. I forced a smile.

She opened it the rest of the way.

“Are you drunk?!”

“No.”

She told me to walk a straight line.

I refused.

I didn’t drive over there to perform sobriety tests on my own front porch.

“You’re drunk.”

Something in me snapped.

“I’m her dad!”

My voice came out louder than I intended.

She slammed the door in my face.

The same door on the house I was still paying for. The same house I’d already been removed from.

The anger arrived instantly.

Hot. Primitive. Disproportionate.

Being blocked from seeing my daughter hit a part of my brain that wasn’t interested in nuance or strategy. For the first time during the divorce, I wasn’t thinking.

I was reacting.

For the longest time, bedtime followed the same frustrating pattern.

Nina could only fall asleep on my bed.

Once she was asleep, I’d carefully transfer her into the travel crib.

Then the real challenge began.

Sometimes she’d wake up immediately, stand up, and start crying. Other nights I’d end up sitting on the floor beside the crib until she fell asleep again. The transfer rarely held.

After enough failed attempts, I stopped asking how to make the transfer smoother and started asking a different question.

Was she old enough for her own bed?

Turns out she was.

I ordered a simple toddler bed online. Nothing fancy. Low to the ground, easy to climb into, and straightforward to assemble. Half an hour later it was sitting in her room.

The mattress and sheets arrived a few days later.

Every time Nina came over, I’d point to it and say,

“Bed.”

She started pointing at it too.

“Bed!”

At first it was just another object to explore. She climbed over the rails like a jungle gym, laid on the mattress for a few seconds, then wandered off to the next adventure.

Exactly what I wanted.

The bed wasn’t something strange anymore.

It had become part of her environment.

The next overnight visit was the real test.

I squeezed into the tiny bed beside her and read our usual bedtime story. Then we went through the normal routine: lights off, bedroom quiet, Marconi Union’s Weightless playing softly through the speaker.

Instead of moving her after she fell asleep, I stayed beside the bed.

Eventually I slid onto the floor where she could still see me.

A little while later I inched back onto my own bed, positioned so I remained in her line of sight. I opened my laptop and waited.

She looked over a few times.

Then closed her eyes.

A few minutes later, she was asleep.

No transfer.

No crying.

No sitting on the floor for another round.

The problem hadn’t been bedtime.

It had been the system.

Sometimes progress doesn’t come from trying harder.

It comes from changing the environment so the next step becomes natural.

System upgraded.

Work wrapped up and I needed a reset before picking Nina up from daycare.

I grabbed a shot of espresso from the apartment lobby and figured I’d drink it by the pool. Sunny afternoon. Quiet complex. Better than staring at another screen.

When I opened the gate, there was only one person out there.

Melody.

The curvy blonde neighbor with the labradoodle I’d met the previous summer.

She was stretched out in a light pink bikini with a bottle of wine hidden inside her oversized purse.

I took a chair in the shade.

No rush.

I already had a built-in time constraint. Daycare pickup was coming, so there was no temptation to overstay the interaction.

Once I finished the espresso, I walked over on my way out.

“Yo, I gotta run, but don’t I know you through Isaac?”

She laughed.

“Yeah.”

We spent a few minutes catching up.

She mentioned she was moving to a cheaper apartment after landing a new job. Every so often she’d top off her wine glass from the bottle stashed in her purse, then eventually pulled out a miniature Jack Daniel’s shooter.

“Celebrating?” I asked.

“New job.”

I told her about The Hitching Post, the wine bar I usually stop at near her new place, and suggested we grab a drink sometime.

I told her to take my number.

Instead, she insisted I take hers.

I handed her my phone.

She entered it.

Time was up.

“I’ve gotta grab my daughter.”

She smiled, raised her glass, and said,

“Cheers.”

Then tapped my empty espresso mug against it.

Not bad.

But collecting a phone number isn’t the finish line.

It’s permission to start the next conversation.

The Airport Son Effect

It started at the airport.

My wife had a habit of speed-walking twenty feet ahead of me, usually fueled by the belief that missing a flight was always thirty seconds away. The moment we entered the terminal, she would take point and start navigating while I followed at a normal pace.

I never fought her on it.

If she was that passionate about leading the expedition to Gate B17, I wasn’t going to sprint through the terminal to establish dominance like a fucking clown. I knew where we were going. I wasn’t worried about being late.

At first it was simply an accommodation.

She was anxious.

I wasn’t.

But over time I noticed something interesting.

The behavior didn’t stop at the airport.

The more she assumed responsibility for directing the situation, the more she started viewing herself as the competent one and me as the dependent one.

Anxiety had quietly become authority.

Relaxation had quietly become dependence.

She used to joke about being “Airport Mom.”

I joked that I was “Airport Son.”

People laughed.

In hindsight, it wasn’t really a joke.

It was a role assignment.

Once you’re cast into a role, pushing back against it often becomes further evidence that the role fits.

Eventually she acted as though I couldn’t navigate an airport without assistance. Not because I was incapable, but because she’d gradually adopted the role of manager while assigning me the role of supervised child.

That’s when I started noticing a pattern.

Some men don’t get friend-zoned.

Some don’t even get husband-zoned.

They get son-zoned.

The Phenomenon

Getting son-zoned is what happens when a romantic partner gradually stops relating to you as an adult equal and starts relating to you as a dependent.

At first, the shift is subtle. It appears in small corrections, unnecessary instructions, second-guessing, and the growing assumption that one person is responsible for directing the relationship while the other follows along.

Nothing dramatic happens.

There is no conversation. No declaration. No obvious turning point.

The dynamic simply shifts a few inches at a time.

Over time, you’re no longer treated as a trusted adult moving through life alongside her. You’re no longer viewed as a co-leader or experienced as a romantic counterpart.

Instead, you become someone who is guided, monitored, and increasingly relieved of authority.

The relationship quietly adopts a parent-child undertone without either person explicitly agreeing to it.

That’s what makes the experience so difficult to identify.

One day you realize you’re being spoken to differently. Judged differently. Trusted less. Desired less.

The original relationship still exists on paper.

But the roles have changed.

You’re no longer being related to as a man.

You’re being related to as a responsibility.

That’s son-zoning.

How It Feels From the Inside

The strange thing about getting son-zoned is that it rarely feels dramatic while it’s happening.

The relationship simply drifts into a different shape until one day you realize you’re living inside something that feels fundamentally different from what you started with.

You begin second-guessing decisions that never used to require discussion. Your autonomy shrinks without anyone explicitly taking it away. You contribute, help, and carry your share of the load, yet somehow you never feel like you’re steering anything.

You’re involved in the operation of the household.

Just not the direction of it.

That’s the feeling most men struggle to articulate.

You’re still present.

Still useful.

Still reliable.

But increasingly treated like a participant rather than a principal.

Nothing appears openly hostile. In fact, much of it gets framed as care, concern, responsibility, or organization.

Which is why the dynamic is so difficult to identify.

There is no villain.

No dramatic confrontation.

Just the gradual realization that your opinions carry less weight, your judgment inspires less trust, and your role feels increasingly predefined.

The relationship still functions.

But it no longer feels adult-to-adult.

No explosion.

Just a quiet downgrade.

I found a booth in the coffee shop attached to the lobby of my Airbnb apartment.

Sat down. Exhaled. Called Blackridge Family Law.

The last firm I contacted sent me some intake guy who collected my information, listened to the situation, and disappeared into the system afterward. No follow-up. No movement.

At that point, I wasn’t even sure what language to use anymore.

Wife. Ex-wife. Pending divorce. Technically married. Structurally over.

The distinctions were starting to blur.

A woman answered and introduced herself as the lead attorney, Claire Bennett.

I gave her the overview. Personal information. My wife. My daughter. Timeline. Living situation.

But unlike the others, she actually started pulling on threads.

I told her I cheated.

Strip clubs. Escorts.

She paused, then asked for specifics.

What exactly happened?

That caught me off guard.

I explained that most of it involved lap dances and oral sex.

She immediately shifted into legal analysis mode.

“Did you receive or give oral?” she asked.

I told her received.

Then she asked whether there had been full intercourse.

I said no.

“Under the law, that isn’t illegal.”

Hmmm.

I already liked this lawyer more than the others.

She told me she’d handled cases from both sides before. Then she started outlining strategy calmly, like she’d already run the simulation in her head.

No judgment. No theatrics.

Just positioning.

Eventually she got to the number.

$3000 for a Tier 1 retainer.

I leaned back for a second.

Well.

I guess this is how it works now.

I agreed.

She told me we’d wait for my wife to formally file before making any moves.

I felt a sense of relief after the call.

Not because the situation improved.

But because someone had finally stopped reacting emotionally to it and started coming up with the next steps.

Somewhere along the way, my daughter stopped being a baby and became a little person.

It didn’t happen overnight.

There was no milestone. No ceremony.

One day she needed help with everything. Then suddenly she was walking into daycare on her own, choosing her own toys, telling me what she wanted to eat, and running toward me when I showed up for pickup.

The dependence is fading.

The connection isn’t.

Personality

The biggest thing I’ve noticed this year is that she wants agency.

She likes making choices, figuring things out, and doing things herself. If there’s a task she thinks she can accomplish, she wants the opportunity to try before anyone steps in.

But underneath that independence is a kid who still wants her people nearby.

She’ll wander off to explore an entire room by herself, then climb into my lap for five minutes.

Not because she needs help.

Because she wants connection.

She’s confident enough to venture out.

Secure enough to come back.

Exploration

This has become one of her defining traits.

She doesn’t wait around to be entertained. She investigates. Cabinets. Books. Cups. Puddles. Random objects adults would never notice.

Sometimes I catch myself watching her and realizing she genuinely enjoys figuring things out.

I don’t need to direct every moment.

I just need to make sure the environment is reasonably safe.

After that, she takes it from there.

Communication

We’re no longer in the babble phase.

We’re in the negotiation phase.

She communicates constantly now through words, gestures, pointing, expressions, tiny demands, and tiny negotiations.

She tells me when she wants blueberries.

She tells me when she wants milk.

She tells me when she’s interested in something.

And when she doesn’t like an idea, trust me, the message arrives loud and clear.

The most fascinating part is watching language attach itself to reality.

Every month more objects gain names.

Every month more thoughts gain words.

You can almost see the map forming.

Food

One thing is clear:

She likes flavor.

She’s not impressed by bland food and doesn’t care about my meal-planning objectives.

Current favorites include BBQ chicken, sweet potatoes, ground beef, blueberries, Greek yogurt, and avocado.

Toddler appetite follows no known laws of physics.

One day she’ll reject a meal without tasting it.

The next day she’ll devour something I assumed she’d hate.

I’ve stopped trying to predict it.

It’s weather.

Not strategy.

Play

Focused.

Curious.

Observant.

She can spend surprising amounts of time investigating things most adults would walk past without noticing.

A book.

A spoon.

An ice cube.

A puddle after it rains.

She doesn’t always need flashing lights or constant stimulation.

She likes discovering things for herself.

I’ve learned some of our best moments happen when I’m not leading the activity at all.

I’m just nearby.

Watching.

Available.

Emotions

She has big feelings sometimes.

That’s part of the job description.

She gets frustrated.

She gets upset.

Then she recovers.

What stands out most isn’t the emotional swings.

It’s the resilience.

She’s adapting to two homes, two routines, and two different environments better than most adults would.

Kids are more durable than people think.

Social Development

Daycare is starting to show.

I notice more words. More manners. More awareness of other people.

She watches other kids.

Copies behaviors.

Experiments socially.

Learns constantly.

It’s fascinating watching her little world expand beyond family.

Sleep

Sleep finally feels less like a hostage negotiation.

For a long time it felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

Now we’re building something that resembles a routine.

She’s learning to fall asleep with me nearby instead of directly on top of me.

That’s progress.

For both of us.

Potty Training

The potty is no longer decorative furniture.

She knows what it’s for.

She’s used it successfully multiple times.

She sits willingly.

Shows awareness.

No battles.

No pressure.

Just repetition and encouragement.

She’s leading more of that process than I am.

What I’ve Learned

She’s not fragile.

She’s not passive.

She’s not waiting for someone else to lead her life.

She’s curious.

Determined.

Observant.

Sometimes stubborn.

Often hilarious.

Always paying attention.

This year taught me something simple:

Confidence grows when children are trusted with age-appropriate freedom.

My Role

Last year I felt like a protector.

This year I feel more like a guide.

I’m still the safe place.

But now I’m also the coach, the observer, the boundary setter, and the audience for her discoveries.

I don’t need to carry her through every experience anymore.

I need to walk beside her while she experiences them herself.

That’s been the adjustment.

Less directing.

More allowing.

Less protecting from every challenge.

More making sure she has room to meet them herself.

Two Years In

The baby who once sat quietly on a playmat now runs toward me at daycare pickup.

The baby who needed help with everything now insists on doing things herself.

The baby who explored my apartment by crawling now walks through it like she pays rent.

She’s becoming independent.

Curious.

Expressive.

Resilient.

And honestly, the thing I’m proudest of isn’t any particular milestone.

It’s the relationship.

She knows she can explore.

She knows she can come back.

She knows I’m here.

That foundation is doing most of the work.

A younger guy I knew had recently landed his first serious relationship.

Off the market now.

Meanwhile, I was drifting back into it.

He mentioned a friend of his named Rob who was good with cold approach and social calibration. Said I should meet him if I wanted to shake the rust off.

So I agreed.

Rob told me to meet him at Crescent Galleria.

Weird location. I hadn’t been there since I was a kid eating food court Chinese food with my parents.

He told me to meet near the Voltaris showroom.

I wandered around for a while before finally asking an employee where it was. Rob texted me:

“Near the escalators.”

Eventually I spotted him.

Loose black shirt. Gold chain. Trendy glasses. Black pants. White Yeezy-style sneakers. Streetwear.

First thing he asked:

“You nervous?”

“A little,” I admitted.

I told him I’d mostly done approaches in bars and lounges before. Never in a mall or a store. Never cold in broad daylight under fluorescent lighting with families and shoppers everywhere.

He nodded.

“Alright. I’ll show you one.”

We followed a Hispanic girl with curly black hair wearing a tracksuit. Rob opened smoothly, got her talking almost immediately, lingered for a minute, then exchanged numbers.

As soon as we walked away he shrugged.

“She was a hoe.”

Field assessment complete.

Then he looked at me.

“You’re next.”

He pointed out a Latina girl and told me to go.

I hesitated too long.

By the time I moved, she was already at the escalator. I followed anyway, but the momentum was gone. She stayed buried in her phone the whole time.

Rob noticed it too.

“Too slow.”

Then he immediately started scanning for the next one.

At one point I saw a mom and daughter nearby and thought:

There’s no way this guy is about to make me approach a mother in front of her kid.

Then a tall blonde with icy blue eyes walked past us briskly.

Ah. There it is.

I matched her pace and opened.

“We haven’t met. I had to come say hi.”

She barely slowed down.

“Thanks. I have a boyfriend.”

Clean rejection.

Afterward Rob broke it down instantly.

“You leaned in too much.”

I told him it was because she couldn’t hear me.

“Don’t be afraid to use your voice,” he said. “That’s a limiting belief.”

Interesting phrasing.

Next was another Hispanic girl. Slightly more polished than the others.

Again, I delayed.

By the time I got there she had already entered a store. The interaction felt dead before it started.

“I like your hair,” I said.

“Thanks.”

Then she walked off.

Rob shook his head.

“Before the store. Not inside the store.”

Timing. Positioning. Momentum.

That seemed to be most of the game.

Last one was an Asian girl.

“Just do a compliment,” he said.

I walked beside her and opened:

“Hey, I like your tattoo.”

Without fully looking at me she replied:

“Sorry. I really don’t want to be left alone right now.”

That one landed harder than the others.

Three rejections in a row under fluorescent mall lighting is a strange form of psychological conditioning.

Still, I noticed something important.

I could survive it.

Rob seemed satisfied once I hit three approaches.

He said the mall didn’t have much volume anymore anyway.

I suggested we head toward my side of town instead.

He agreed.

We hopped into his red Corvette.

As he drove, I noticed a fresh Polynesian tattoo sleeve wrapping down his left arm.

“New?” I asked.

“Needed more edge,” he said casually.

I glanced at his Google Maps while he drove. His recent locations were all gun stores.

“You shoot?”

“Got a rifle.”

Even more edge.

He dropped me at my car and said he’d swing by my area after stopping home first.

Later that evening I met him in my apartment parking lot.

The second he stepped out of the Corvette, he started talking to two black girls walking nearby.

No hesitation.

One of them was wearing an EDM-style outfit.

“Y’all going to EDC?”

Immediate conversation.

We hadn’t even left the parking lot yet.

I grabbed beers from the brewery across the street and we walked the Neon Vein trail toward Tidehouse.

At one point another girl complimented his tattoo sleeve.

Damn.

The edge theory was already paying dividends.

At Tidehouse he kept opening groups casually, almost mechanically at this point. White girls. Mixed groups. Didn’t seem to matter.

At one point I told him how I’d blown up my marriage running a dual life.

He listened, then looked over and said:

“You’re not a family man anymore. You’re a player now.”

Encouraging reframe.

Later he started assessing my appearance the same way he assessed approaches.

No major criticism on style. That seemed to pass inspection.

But he told me to get whitening strips because my teeth were getting yellow.

Then he told me to get back in the gym consistently and start drinking protein shakes again.

He wasn’t wrong.

Between my daughter, work, tennis, and everything else, the gym had started slipping quietly into the background.

The whitening strips comment was new though.

By the end of the night we both agreed the city felt low-volume. Cloudy Saturday. Strange energy.

We called it and agreed to meet again the following week.

Lessons

Cold approach has less to do with women than most men think.

It’s really exposure therapy for hesitation.

The actual conversation matters less than momentum. Most interactions are decided before the opener even lands.

Delay kills energy.

So does overthinking.

Guys like Rob have removed the emotional weight from social risk entirely. Approaching isn’t a dramatic event anymore.

It’s procedural.

A rep.

And once enough reps accumulate, rejection stops feeling personal.

It just becomes environmental feedback.

Friday

Showed up to daycare a little after 5. That meant the kids were already upstairs on the playground.

I went up, opened the gate, and the teacher called out, “Nina.” She spotted me and started walking over.

“Yo Dad—don’t forget her bag.”

Blanket, crib sheet, sippy cup. I’d missed it last time. Noted.

I let Nina walk herself down the stairs. There’s a lower railing built for them—she knows how to use it now.

At home, I put her to work right away.

She helped load the dishes. Utensils mostly—she can handle those. Then I handed her the dishwasher tab and let her drop it in.

Shoes off. Put away.

Diaper change.

Then pants—daycare’s working on getting her to do it herself, so I let her try before stepping in.

We went to the bathroom to wash hands. She said it before I did.

“Ash hand!”

I started prepping dinner—sweet potatoes for a shredded BBQ chicken bowl—but she needed rotation.

Milk. Bottle cap. Comb. Cup of water.

Just enough to keep her engaged while I worked.

Everything went into the Instant Pot. Pressure on.

Fed her once it was ready, but it came out too hot. Mixed in avocado mash to bring it down.

Started the bath.

Her tub technically goes to two, but it felt like time to transition. Filled the main tub shallow and kept it controlled.

Got her cleaned up, into PJs.

She passed out quickly on my bed.

System held.

Saturday

Slept in, and so did Nina. We woke up around 10. I had her wash her hands and brush her teeth.

I’d been wanting to start a daddy-daughter Saturday ritual, so I made blueberry pancakes. Strapped her into the high chair, mixed the batter, buttered the pan, and got the first batch going. Once they were ready, I cut them into bite-sized pieces and poured syrup on top while she watched.

As she ate, I got myself ready. She didn’t finish everything, but still hit me with a “Yum.”

We headed downstairs so I could grab coffee. On the way, I pointed things out—“wall,” “door,” “elevator.” When we got back, I let her play solo while I sat with the coffee.

By then it was already lunchtime. Same setup—wash hands, high chair, bib. I tried the shredded BBQ chicken bowl again, but she kept saying “MEH!” and swatting it away. Switched to Greek yogurt with blueberries and strawberries. That worked.

After lunch, I put her down for a nap and knocked out a few chores. About 45 minutes later, she was up—crying, sitting up, ready to go.

I put her sunglasses on, strapped her into the stroller, and headed out.

First stop was Tidehouse on the Neon Vein. We found shade. I got her a bottle of water—it was hot out. She drained it and started playing with the cap until it slipped through the cracks in the bench.

“Uh oh.”

I couldn’t get it either.

Nearby, a couple’s kids were playing giant Connect Four. Nina locked onto it and started moving over. She was too short to reach, so I lifted her up so she could drop the pieces in. She stayed on that for a bit.

We headed back toward the apartment and stopped at the courtyard across the street. Brewery, restaurant, parents posted up with drinks while their kids run around.

She was ready to get out of the stroller, so I let her walk. Steps, gravel, dirt, ramps—she explored everything. At one point she grabbed a boy’s green truck. I said, “Nina, no,” and she put it back. Small win.

I took her to Grease Point next door as a treat. Chicken tenders, fried shrimp, fries, honey mustard. We sat outside. The waitress commented on how cute she was.

Nina was grinning while I fed her—trying new food, dipping everything.

We got home around 7. Skipped the bath.

She passed out.

Sunday

I tried to sleep in, but Nina kept waking up until she finally sat upright on the bed staring at me.

Alright. Guess we’re up.

I got her to attempt the potty, though she’d gotten rusty after spring break at her mom’s. Then came the usual routine: wash hands, brush teeth, high chair deployment.

She kept yelling:

“LO LEY! LO LEY!”

which I eventually realized meant blueberries. She still can’t fully pronounce it.

I made her oatmeal and mixed in her favorite—“lo leys.” She demolished the entire bowl.

After breakfast I cleaned her up and let her roam around the playmat. She grabbed a few animal books, pointed at different animals, and I named them while she tried repeating the words back to me.

Around lunchtime Luca came by. I let him entertain Nina while I cleaned the kitchen and reheated some ground turkey pasta. Same feeding routine afterward. I gave her a bottle of milk, shut the blinds, queued up the sleep playlist, and got her down for her afternoon nap on my bed.

Luca and I ate out on the balcony for a bit before he headed out. On the way back upstairs I grabbed a coffee and started knocking out chores around the apartment.

Then I heard Nina wailing from the bedroom.

Nice. Operational again.

I strapped her into the stroller and took her on the usual loop down the Neon Vein to burn energy and get some fresh air. When we got back, I fed her some leftover shredded BBQ chicken bowl before starting the transition back to her mom’s place.

I packed up the washed blanket, crib sheet, and water bottle into her daycare bag, got her shoes on, and headed toward the parking deck.

She insisted on carrying the bag herself, dragging it across the floor the entire way.

I loaded everything into the car, dropped her off at the mothership, and headed back home.

Another successful rotation.
